Welcome to Team SPECTRE

Established in 2008 and operating out of Landing Zone Paintball, Special Tactics and Reconnaissance (SPECTRE) is a corps of players and friends that have the common goals of attending games across the United States, achieve victory by using practiced tactics and abilities, have fun doing so, and shed some positive light on the paintball community. Specializing in force recon with direct action capabilities, close quarters battle, and anti-tank operations, SPECTRE can be relied upon to complete any task given to them effectively and efficiently.

Our home field is The Landing Zone in Columbiaville. Living Legends 4

It’s been just over a week since Living Legends 4 at CPX Sports in Joliet, Illinois and most of our team has just started to feel back to normal. Around 1000 players made it out for Legends this year and it was SPECTRE’s second trip in as many years to the pro-bowl of scenario paintball (as Honu from the Hellions refers to it). As Legends has come to be known, it was a great weekend for networking with other teams, potential sponsors, seeing old friends, and meeting new ones.

The theme this year was based on the movie Escape from New York with Jared “Bad Karma Six” Bronson from Team Bad Karma acting as general for the Warhammer side and Andre “Wolf” Critchlow (of Wolf’s Den fame) playing the role of The Duke of New York and generaled the opposing side. The other main role player for the weekend was Weltman of Damage Inc. playing the role of Snake Pliskin.

SPECTRE was given command of the Mongrels gang for the Warhammer side and partnered with Four Horsemen Paintball Team to complete objectives. The Mongrels completed both of their “rumble” objectives, one on each day, along with one attack and defend mission on Sunday. The rumbles required specific gangs (groups of mission teams) to control a specific territory on the map (our rumbles were both at Harlem). During the hour your gang had to control the territory, you also had to have a player holding down a button inside a box that was keeping time. The team that held down the button longer won the rumble. For both of the Mongrel’s rumbles, Will "Crazy Celt" Conaty from the Horsemen took that position for over 45 minutes each time. Each rumble was worth 25 points for Warhammer.

Additionally, SPECTRE was a major influence on taking and holding the hyperball field (Alphabet City) through the first day of play, pushing the Duke all the way back to Bedlam (Upper East Side) through sustained and accurate rocket fire and holding a wide perimeter through Central Park, Trinity Cemetery, and into Midtown, disrupting The Duke’s defend mission, earning Warhammer 100 points.

During the second day of play The Duke was able to push and hold Warhammer back to our insertion for most of the day and we were barely able to get out of the Upper East Side and push back into Alphabet City. However, like previously mentioned, SPECTRE and the Horsemen successfully completed their rumble objective from the break and were able to hold off The Duke’s advances further than Harlem for the first two hours of the game on Sunday. Special recognition goes out to Corey “Suprize” Lougheed, Chris “Splat” Campbell, and Aaron “Fox” Feit (from Four Horsemen) for holding off a majority of The Duke’s forces for more than an hour racking up over 65 eliminations. Furthermore, Phil “Chowder” Shamsuddoha deserves recognition for getting two slapsticks during the Final Battle.

In the end, The Duke tallied 780 points, smashing Warhammer’s 435, however, every player that comes out to Legends walks away a winner because of the rich paintball community experience you get when you’re there.

A special thanks to our friends The Hellions, especially Honu and Sky, for everything they do for us at these events. Also, we’d like to thank Bad Karma for giving us an opportunity to be a part of the scenario in giving us the leadership of The Mongrels. Additionally, The Four Horsemen, for being a great team to ally with and straight up busting their rears all weekend. We’d also like to thank The Great Lakes Rangers for everything they’ve done for us and letting us store their gear in their trailer. Last but not least we’d like to thank our generous sponsors Tippmann, Pinokio, Ninja Paintball, The Landing Zone (our home field), and our newest sponsor, Valken. Without the great gear and support these companies provide us, we would not be able to continue playing. One more thank you goes out to Tom “Tomcat” Cunningham (from catshackreports.com) for the constructive criticism and tips you gave our brother Corey about our team during the weekend. If it weren’t for people like Tomcat, the paintball community wouldn’t be as astounding as it is!

Axis & Allies

Sherwood Forest in La Porte, Indiana held their inaugural in-house produced scenario game, Axis & Allies (based on the popular board game) the weekend of April 30th and May 1st, and SPECTRE was in attendance. The registration numbers were at around 500 players including several teams from around the area such as Team WOW, Steel Reserve, Hellions, Rage in Paint, Team ESP, Region Rats, Great Lakes Rangers, Praetorian Guard, Thunderstruck, Chicago WolfPack, The PBNation Mod Squad, PTM, FUBAR, In Contempt, and Tango including a few others.

Death Dancer from Team WOW was the general for the Allies with Honu from the Hellions as his XO and Bear from Steel Reserve was the general for the Axis with Lefty from Rage in Paint as his XO. We were recruited to the Allied side soon after we decided to attend the event and were happy to play alongside Honu and Sky once again.

The game was an all out slugfest all weekend, with both sides continually pushing each other out of vital control points on the field. With the newly added elements to the scenario like the requirement to have keys to unlock and lock structures on the field, having to take a fuel depot and transport fuel (five gallon jugs full of water) back to your headquarters to use bombers or tanks, the ability to destroy and rebuild power stations to turn of the newly installed lights around the castle and town area of the field during the night portion of play, and the implementation of the Swedish Trader, with whom you had to deal with to get money and props for missions, it made for an excellent, intriguing, and extremely fun game.

SPECTRE was tasked with many missions of the “take and hold” variety. On several occasions we would be given the order to assault as far into the enemy territory as possible and hold there until the opposing reinsert closed, which we accomplished multiple times. A majority of our area of operation for the weekend was centered around the southwest area of the field. Most of our fighting took place near Damascus, Ardennes (the castle), Nanos, Rome, Buna-Gona, Manila, and Berlin (the fuel depot), with occasional missions to other areas of the field. Additionally, we were given the task to run anti-tank missions on numerous occasions as we were equipped with a Metadyne Havoc launcher (manned mostly by Ken and for a short time by Randy) and were able to stay in the fight longer because of the deft maneuvering of our squad medic, Brendan, who had 178 medic actions during the course of the weekend.

The night game provided a new experience for most of us. We have played night games prior to this event, however, we were assigned to protect Ardennes and then attack to Rome during the night game. Most of the area surrounding Ardennes was lit up with torches and overhead lighting. Our assault on Rome from Ardennes was successful, although it was very poorly lit. Additionally, our team played a major part in completing the Allied mission of locating and activating an air raid siren in the castle.

After everything was said and done, and even though the game was very close all weekend, the Axis side edged out the Allies with a score of 1892-1819. SPECTRE was recognized by the Allied general and XO as the Most Valuable Team (our first official scenario award) and also recognized by the Axis general and XO as the Most Formidable Opponent. We were incredibly honored and extremely surprised at our recipience of both awards.

Sherwood’s Axis & Allies was an extraordinarily fun experience and SPECTRE would like to thank Joe, Kathy, Patty, the Discipline Lords and Darksyde (the awesome ref crew), and all the great players and teams that came out in addition to our sponsors, Tippmann Sports, Pinokio Hoppers, and our home field Landing Zone Paintball.

Operation: Noble Cause

It was a small scenario game SPECTRE attended at the Fort McClellan urban assault course in Anniston, Alabama held this past weekend, January 29th and 30th. There were approximately 300 players on hand mostly made up of teams such as Bayou Mafia, Rebel Force Pirates, Carolina Riot, 5x5, ARC Troopers, and Gun King$ (along with others) as well as a few walk-ons.

The site was around 16 buildings, ranging from one to four stories all with multiple rooms, doorways, murder holes, and windows. As you can imagine, this made for extremely fierce fighting from room to room and house to house. Most of the exciting action took place in the Bank (D), building 481 (L), the Disco (K), and the area surrounding the Church (N).

During the first day, SPECTRE was part of the Militia and on the attack along side RFP and Carolina Riot. Our mission was to secure the blue building (M) and once it was secure move onto the Church (N). We immediately secured the blue building and held it for the first hour of the day while repelling the Coalition back to the Church where they became heavily entrenched. The general then modified our orders to attack and clear building 481 (L). After our assault on 481 we held it for a majority of the remainder of the day only losing control of the building after our squad was completely out of paint and down to three members. During our occupation, we continually turned away the blue team from moving through the north end of the field with sustained and precise fire from our pump squad of Chris “Splat” Campbell, Bryan “Poorwolf” Peckham, and Randy “Fox” Ark.

The second day started with a Militia assault on the Bank (D). After assisting RFP in clearing the basement of Coalition forces we cleared the rest of the Bank and posted Jason “Joker” Fidler on the door and Nic “Lobes” Bowler on the second floor, where they held their post for the better part of the day, only leaving after we secured building 481 once again. Shortly after 481 was secured Doc from RFP cleared the blue building (a major thorn in the Militia’s side) with a well placed rocket attack followed up by Poorwolf and Fox clearing the back room while Splat, Joker, Brendan “Striker” Lane, Joe “Doc” Barr, and Matt “Radar” Brandon continued to defend 481. The day ended with the Final Battle in which SPECTRE was tasked with securing the west end of the Disco (K). We stormed the disco and held it the entirety of the Final Battle while repulsing wave after wave of Coalition forces and pressed them back into the woods and their spawn. The battle ended with Fox leading a charge of Striker and Radar on the Church (N) with Poorwolf laying down direct suppression fire.

There were conflicting reports at the end of the weekend declaring the Militia and the Coalition winners (with Coalition holding more land throughout the weekend but Militia completing more missions and winning the final battle), but in the end, all the participants were winners with the excellent ref staff, awesome field of play, and exceptionally sportsmanlike play by everybody. Operation: Noble Cause will go down as one of SPECTRE’s favorite events.
